TV Series
This is definitely a mixed bag—not all of it qualifies as “excellent TV,” but in my opinion, it’s all binge-worthy. Most of what I watch tends to be based on true events, and like my taste in movies, there’s plenty of drama. Enjoy!
Dramas
-
The Empress (2022) Germany
I always love a good period piece, especially one that is (loosely) based on true events. The empress of the Austrian Hungarian Empire was a unique human being and so is her story.
-
The Dropout (2022) USA
It’s shocking that this is true.
-
Anatomy of a Scandal (2022) UK
In this miniseries, an apparently perfect British Politician unexpectedly finds himself in a scandal. Nothing new in the plot but the cast is excellent. Hard to stop watching.
-
Inventing Anna (2022) USA
Another miniseries based on real events. It fascinates me how long people can get away with things, especially of this magnitude. We see what we want to believe.
-
Chestnut Man (2021) Denmark
This one is very dark. Not usually my style, but if you are into thrillers, you might enjoy. The gist of it is crimes, detectives and drama.
-
Beartown (2021) Norway
A small town in Norway boosts their hockey team by bringing in a famous hockey player as head coach. Things go a bit sideways and drama ensues.
-
You Don't Know Me (2021) UK
A man is charged for a crime he claims he did not commit. The mini series tracks how he defends himself in court.
-
Halston (2021) USA
A fun portrayal of the rise and fall of American designer Halston.
-
Unorthodox (2020) Germany
A young Hasidic Jew flees her marriage in Brooklyn in search of freedom.
-
The Investigation (2020) Denmark
This miniseries chronicles the investigation of the Submarine Case that happened in 2017 in the Copenhagen harbour. There is no gore, it is purely focused on the investigation. And is very well done.
-
The Queens Gambit (2020) USA
An orphaned chess prodigy sets out to become the best in the world.
-
The Twelve (2019) Belgium
Belgian series about the 12 jury members in a murder trial. Intense but well done.
-
The Spy (2019) Israel
This is the true story of Isreal’s most prominent spy.
-
Taboo (2017) UK
Tom Hardy at his best. It is gritty, well acted and hard to stop watching.
-
True Detective Season 3 (2017) USA
Detectives chasing criminals…
-
The Crown (2016) UK
British Royalty in bright lights. Another excellent production from writing, to casting and set design you will not be disappointed. And not to worry, this isn’t a Royalty fan show, this will give you a deep look at what goes on behind the veneer.
-
Deutschland 83 (2015) Germany
Deutchland 83/85/89 follows the decline of East Germany. It is riveting and interesting snippet of history. This is a 3 season show with different directors for each season. My favourite was by far the first season.
-
The Bureau (2015) France
Another (excellent) spy show.
-
Peaky Blinders (2013) UK
The whole series from start to finish is done to perfection. Great acting, perfect set and costume design and riveting story line.
Comedy / Feel Good
-
High Maintenance (2012) USA
A pot dealer in New York City and all the adventures he gets him into during his deliveries.
-
Sex in the City (1998) USA
I had to. Just go back to the beginning and watch if you haven’t for a while. It’s worth your time. Avoid the movies and definitely avoid the latest iteration And Just Like That.
-
Downtown Abbey (2010) UK
I am a sucker for a well executed period piece and this one is definitely on point. Perfect casting, perfect set design and perfect costume design. You will get carried away with the story. Maggie Smith steals the show in my opinion. Her one liners will make you giggle. If haven’t seen and you like a good period piece, this is binge worthy.
